ABSTRACT
A field experiment was conducted during rabi season of 2014-15 to study the phenology, accumulation of growing degree days (GDD), helio-thermal unit (HTU), photo-thermal unit (PTU), heat use efficiency (HUE) and performance of wheat cultivars (GW 366 and MP 1202) grown under different environments (27th Nov., 12th Dec., and 27th Dec.) and irrigation schedules (Two, three and four irrigations at CRI + Flowering, CRI + Flowering + Milking and CRI + Late Jointing +Flowering + Milking). The crop sown on 27th November took maximum calendar days, growing degree days, photo-thermal units and helio-thermal units to attain maturity which reduced with subsequent delay in sowing time. The pheno-thermal indices decreased during vegetative stages but increased during reproductive phenophases with delay in sowing. Pheno-thermal index for cultivars and irrigation schedules was very similar during the later stages of reproductive phase. The grain yield recorded in 27th Nov. sowing was significantly superior over rest of the sowing times. Reduction in grain yield due to delay in sowing time was to the tune of 29.3 and 17.3 per cent respectively. Wheat cv. GW 366 recorded significantly highest grain yield (4.23 t/ha) and attain maturity with maximum number of calendar days, GDD, HTU and PTU as compared to cv. MP 1202. The crop receiving four irrigations at critical stages i.e. CRI, flowering, late jointing and milking recorded significantly highest grain yield over rest of the treatments. The HUE on grain and biological yield basis was highest when crop was sown on 27th Nov (3.33 and 8.17 kg/ha/0C day) and it reduced with further delay in sowing time. The cv.GW 366 and four irrigations recorded significantly highest HUE. The maximum temperature at heading to milking and milking to dough phases observed to be more sensitive for yield reduction under delayed sowing.
