ABSTRACT
Heterosis for fruit yield and its components was studied in a set of 8 x 8 half diallel over better parent and standard check (GOH-2). The analysis of variance revealed highly significant differences among genotypes, parents and hybrids for all the characters indicating substantial amount of genetic variability present in the material studied. The magnitude of heterosis varied from cross to cross for all the characters studied. For fruit yield, maximum heterosis of 39.15 % (JOL-09-7 x JOL-55-3) and 40.65 % (JOL-09-8 x JOL-08-16) was observed over better parent and standard check. Out of 28 hybrids, 9 hybrids showed significant and positive heterobeltiosis, while 5 hybrids expressed significant and positive economic heterosis for fruit yield per plant over the environments. The high heterotic response in these hybrids for fruit yield per plant resulted mainly due to substantial heterosis for no. of flowering nodes on main stem, fruit length, fruit girth, fruit weight and fruits per plant.
