ABSTRACT
The present study was aimed at finding out the nature and magnitude of genetic variability assessed for 10 different quantitative traits in F2 and F3 of three segregating population viz., ICGV12370 × NRCG12274, GKVK-8B × KCG - 2 and GKVK-5 × KCG - 2 for yield and its yield component traits to select the superior genotypes during kharif 2012 and 2013 summer. In F2 generation GKVK-8B × KCG - 2 and GKVK- 5 × KCG - 2 were distinct for its highest mean value for pod yield plant-1, kernel yield plant-1, shelling percentage, sound mature kernels (SMK %), SCMR and low SLA. In F3 generation GKVK-8B × KCG - 2 and ICGV12370 × NRCG12274 for pod plant-1, pod yield plant-1, kernel yield plant-1, shelling percentage and SCMR but high SMK and low SLA was observed in crosses GKVK- 5 × KCG - 2 and GKVK-8B x KCG - 2. Magnitude of GCV and PCV values was high for pods plant-1, pod yield plant-1, kernel yield plant-1, SMK % and branches plant-1 in all crosses in both generations indicated large extent of genetic variability. All F2 populations showed high heritability with GAM for pods plant-1 and SMK %. Cross ICGV12370 × NRCG12274 showed high heritability with GAM for pod yield plant-1, kernel yield plant-1 followed by GKVK-5 × KCG - 2 for indicating involvement of additive gene action. But in F3 generation moderate heritability with high GAM was observed for plant height, pod yield plant-1, kernel yield plant-1 and SMK % in cross GKVK-8B × KCG - 2 and the cross GKVK-5 × KCG - 2 for branches per plant and SLA. F3 family performance of cross GKVK-8B × KCG - 2 for yield related traits were superior over their parents, check TMV-2 and other crosses.
