ABSTRACT
A 2-year field study was conducted to evaluate the effects of wheat varieties suited to different tillage system and improving water productivity with or without residue on sandy loam soil in North West India. Seven tillage crop establishment methods in main plot and ten wheat varieties treatments viz.,V1-UP 2338, V2 -WH 542,V3 -PBW 154,V4 -DBW 17,V5 -WH 711,V6 -HD2687,V7-PBW 343,V8 -UP2382,V9 - HD1731,V10 -PBW 502 in sub plots were tested by using F test. The number of grains spike-1, spike length (cm), numbers of spikelet’s spike-1and test weight increased significantly in wide raised beds with residue retention plots. The improvement in grain yield 13.12 and 12.07 due to residue retention on wide raised beds and narrow raised beds, respectively over conventional practices. The per cent increased in water use efficiency under wide raised beds over conventional tillage was 28.15% during experimentation. The highest infiltration rate (8.35 cmh-1) was recorded in raised beds with residue whereas; the lowest (4.90 cm h-1) in conventional tillage. Soil bulk density was the highest (1.63 Mg m-3) under zero tillage and the lowest in raised beds with residue (1.53 Mg m-3). Soil penetration resistance recorded significantly lower under raised beds with residue retention plots as compared to zero tillage and conventional tillage treatments. Higher soil organic carbon (4.13–4.50 gkg-1) was measured under residue retention treatments compared to other treatments. Root dry weight, root length, yield attributes, grain and straw yield were significantly higher in DBW 17 variety over rest of varieties.
